Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa’s wife, Shashi Weerawansa, has been sentenced to a two year rigorous prison sentence in relation to a case being heard over producing false information to obtain a diplomatic passport.
The order was issued by Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala today.
Shashi Weerawansa was also fined Rs.100,000.
The Magistrate informed that the failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months in prison.
The Criminal Investigation Department filed the case against Shashi Weerawansa on the 23rd of January 2015, alleging that she committed a punishable offence under the Immigration and Emigration Act for possessing a forged passport.
The CID informed that Shashi Weerawansa was born in 1967 while the passport was forged with her birth year stated as 1971.
Police at the time also informed Court that Shashi Weerawansa has two National Identity Cards bearing both birthdays.
